Haring Mural to Be Sold in San Francisco Mon Jan 9, 5:24 PM ET
SAN FRANCISCO - A huge mural painted for free by late pop artist Keith Haring and displayed in a community center serving disadvantaged children and families is for sale and could fetch millions of dollars, officials said.
Haring, who became famous for graffiti-inspired drawings that appeared in New York subway stations, took one day to create the 8-foot-by-77-foot mural that has graced a wall of the South of Market Child Care Center since 1985.
It features such playful touches as two-headed figures, smiling dogs and a comic self-portrait of the artist, who died of AIDS at age 31 in 1990.
The child care center put the work up for sale after losing its lease and planning a move to a new location. The mural was restored by the New York-based Keith Haring Foundation in 1998 and is reported to be in excellent condition.
Officials with the child care center said the mural has been appraised at between $1 million and $2 million. They plan to use the proceeds to pay off the more than $1 million the center borrowed to build its new facility.
Some foreign collectors have expressed interest, but the center wants the mural to stay in the San Francisco Bay area, said Jane Weil, a child care center board member.
Julia Gruen, executive director of the Keith Haring Foundation, said Haring didn't foresee the murals being sold but likely would not have objected if the organization found itself in financial trouble.

просто его человечки работают в среде только так что многое потеряется
хотя половина его работ в метро 80х спокойно себе поживает в МоМа
